M42 and the smaller M43 (upper left) are at a distance of about 1500 light years.
Also known as the Orion Nebula, this object contains dense dust and gasses that fuel star
formation. M42 is an emission nebula while M43 is a reflection nebula, reflecting
light from M42. The center of this object features a very young still forming star cluster,
The Trapezium Cluster.
